#CHESS SOFTWARE FOR MAC FOR FREE#
If you go the database route and want to mess around with engines, you can get the older Komodo 9 engine for free from their site. If you wanted to try out a free database, and download something like Kingbase or PGNmentor games to go with it, you'd have a bunch of historical games to look through as well. In both cases you can plug engines into them and have the engines play each other. I'm not a huge fan of the SCID gui (can't stand it, honestly), but it definitely does work. If you want a chess database that you can plug engines into, Hiarcs Chess Explorer is your best (and only, really) commercial option, and SCIDvMac is a free option. They seem to have a free demo version though if you want to try that out. Shredder is also still a thing for the Mac, but not sure what it has that would justify paying $50 for. Stockfish is great if you just want to play games, and probably one of the better options for the mac right now. Please continue to give us your feedback and suggestions on how we can help make /r/chess better for everyone.
